The village of Juseu
The vacation rentals described on next page are situated near Juseu.

Juseu is a traditional village (with approximately 40 permanent inhabitants) at the foot of the Spanish Pyrenees in the Ribagorza region in the province of Huesca, Aragon. The village is located on a rocky outcrop at a height of about 800 m (2500 feet), with magnificent views in all directions.

The surroundings

The village provides a starting point for many long walks in an area of great natural beauty and sublime peace and quiet. There are centuries-old, easy footpaths leading to other villages, Romanesque churches and sometimes abandoned monasteries. (Juseu lies on the pilgrimage route GR-18. See ‘senderos’ (footways) at www.ribagorza.com) .
The Mediterranean mountain landscape, with its many almond and olive trees, varies from gently undulating to steep rocky slopes.

The little mountain rivers offer many opportunities for bathing. There is a public swimmingpool in Torres del Obispo at 5 km from Juseu. Within a 15-minutes’ drive, you can also find swimming facilities in the Joaquin Costa lake, into which the river Esera flows. In the summer months, you can rent canoes and sailing boats here. Horseback riding is another of the possibilities.

Climate

Year-round sunshine means that in winter the temperature can rise to 20 degrees (C) in the daytime, but at night there can be some frost. The summers are warm (approximately 30 degrees) and dry, but thanks to the 800 m height, there is almost always a light breeze. In summer you can sit outside almost every evening and enjoy the breathtaking starry sky.

Excursions

Within a one-hour's drive (60 km) lies Benasque-Cerler, a winter sports resort where skiing is possible until about April. In the summer months, one can make high mountain trips in this area. You can also hike in the national nature reserves Ordesa and Posets Maladeta. Maps of these areas are available.

Near to Panillo (± 25 km) is the Tibetan Buddhist temple "Dag Shang Kagyu". A program of this Tibetan monastery is available on the Internet. Meditations and other parts of the program are open to the public upon application.

Alquezar, a mountain village located at a distance of a one-hour's drive, is considered to be the best preserved (Mudejar) monument of the Moorish occupation in the area. A footpath leads downhill from the village to the gorge with waterfalls and underwater caves. Driving back past Barbastro, along the roadside you can see the bodegas of the Somontano region.
